ARA-290 is a synthetic peptide developed from the helix-beta segment of Erythropoietin (EPO). In contrast to EPO’s primary role of stimulating red blood cell formation in the bone marrow, ARA-290 is intended to deliver therapeutic benefits without inducing erythropoiesis.
EPO, a glycoprotein hormone mainly produced by the kidneys, exerts multiple biological effects beyond red blood cell production. These include encouraging the formation of new blood vessels, promoting cell survival, influencing blood pressure regulation, and providing neuroprotective support, particularly in cases of diabetic neuropathy. ARA-290 is designed to retain the neuroprotective and pain-relieving properties linked to EPO while eliminating its effect on red blood cell stimulation.
