Melanotan 1 is a synthetic derivative of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that is used clinically in Europe to help prevent sun-induced skin damage, especially phototoxic reactions, in individuals with erythropoietic protoporphyria. Originally created as a sunless tanning agent, Melanotan 1 also affects various physiological functions, including blood pressure, appetite, and central nervous system activity. Currently, it is being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for the treatment of polymorphic light eruption and in Phase 2 trials for actinic keratosis—a type of sun-related skin damage—and its more severe form, squamous cell carcinoma.
